A protein that could protect against neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s has been discovered.

A team of researchers from the Charing Cross Hospital and Imperial College in London, England have discovered that the naturally occurring protein, 27-kDa heat-shock protein (HSP27), can reduce cell death in the brain.

The discovery, reported in the May 30 […]

T-rays: More Versatile than X-rays

June 3rd, 2003 at 8:28 am » Comments (0)

Just as x-ray technology came along in the 1890s—allowing doctors to peer beneath flesh to see bones and organs—another promising imaging technology is now emerging from an underused chunk of the electromagnetic spectrum: the terahertz frequencies. These so-called t-rays can, like x-rays, see through most materials. But t-rays are believed to be less harmful than […]

Weather Control: Killing Hurricanes

Businessman Peter Cordani has spent four years researching a way to drop absorbent particles into the eye of a storm to disrupt its spin and suck out the moisture.

He admits he won’t stop any hurricanes, but he believes he could save cities and residents from suffering billions of dollars worth of damage by gutting the […]

Tracking Radiation Damage with an Unusual Technique

June 3rd, 2003 at 8:12 am » Comments (0)

Researchers have long suspected that slow-moving, heavy particles such as alpha particles and neutrons should leave a characteristic pattern of damage. These kinds of radiation are known as “densely ionising” because they wreak havoc within a short tunnel; “sparsely ionising” X-rays or gamma rays spread their damage along a much longer path.

Because the damage from […]

First European Space Flight to Mars

The first European mission to another planet successfully blasted off into the night sky over Kazakhstan on Monday to the delight - and relief - of the onlooking scientists and engineers.

Two hours and 10 minutes after lift off, Mars Express sent back its first signal, reporting that it had separated from it its launcher in […]
