The Future of Fraud

In the movie “Catch Me if You Can”, Leonardo DiCaprio played the part of Frank Abagnale, a true life con man who became one of the world’s foremost forgery experts. In a similar twist, Kevin Mitnick, the world’s best known hacker has turned his con artistry to a skill that helps companies fix some of their security holes.

Both Frank Abagnale and Kevin Mitnick are personal friends of Ori Eisen, former AMEX Director of Fraud who will be speaking at the upcoming Night with a Futurist.

Ori Eisen has been tracking the criminal mindset ever since his days doing college research where he devised new methodologies for defeating even the most devious hackers. He has now emerged as one of the industry’s leading thinkers on time-delayed as well as real-time prevention. Mr. Eisen will take us through a fascinating journey on the history of fraud and where it will be heading in the future.

Throughout the history of electronic payments, speed of authorization has been a key factor. Customers waiting for an approval in stores created a need for the credit card associations to speed up the authorization process.

This speeding of authorization (both for fraud and credit) left only a few seconds per transaction. When the Internet came about, the paradigm of the brick and mortar authorization scheme was copied to e-commerce. This meant the merchant and card association still only had only a few seconds to make a decision. Only today, in a card-not-present environment, the merchant becomes liable if the transaction ends up fraudulent.

Mr. Eisen will explain how to understand the Internet shopping paradigm, and ways to minimize fraudulent payments in a world where hacker communities have been growing exponentially.

Ori will be flying in from his home in Phoenix to join us for this special evening.
