iPod Season is Upon Us

The Apple rumour mill has once again gone into overdrive with whispers that the company is planning to roll out its iTunes movie service along with a new generation of iPods at an international press conference next week.

According to BusinessWeek the company is expected to introduce its iTunes movie store initiative mid September, while the Think Secret Apple blog, says its sources indicate the company also plans to unveil a new iPod Nano with a metal finish, and a 5G iPod upgrade at the event.

Details of the press conference were reportedly leaked by European press invited to a private satellite feed in London of the event due to held near Apple’s US headquarters. Although the invitation did not mention specific products, a recent BusinessWeek article points out that we have officially entered "iPod season," with the iPod nano debuting on September 7 last year, only to be followed by the video iPod on October 12. It said both products turned out to be "strong players in the fourth calendar quarter".

Although some Apple enthusiast blogs speculated that the event might also herald a new wider-screen video iPod, or a iPod-phone, much of the focus of the event has beeen concentrated on the prospect of an iTunes movie download service.

BusinessWeek said Apple was aiming to price downloads at $US14.99 for new releases and $US9.99 for older titles, but had to date only signed up Walt Disney studios for the venture. While some studios may come on board at a later date, others are expected to balk at Apple’s pricing to avoid a backlash from retail stores who currently dominate the cut-price sector of the DVD market, it said.
