Monkey Business with Mirrors

According to new research, the average British woman, will spend two years of her life gazing in the mirror.

More than half of the women polled admitted that they look at themselves in any available reflection – even if it was just a TV screen or a shop window.

Celebrities such as Paris Hilton or Victoria Beckham, who pay serious attention to how they look, can be expected to spend a lot of time in front of the mirror.

Men, by comparison, spent less than half a year of their life preening in front of the mirror – though this total increases substantially if your name is Russell Brand.

The poll of 3000 Brits for online specs firm www.buyspecs4less.

co.uk also revealed that, despite checking their reflection an average of four times before leaving the house in the morning, a quarter of women head straight for the loos at work to make sure they are still looking OK.

Generally, only 16% of women consider themselves vain, while 44% of men only take a quick glance in the mirror before a night out.

It doesn’t take a great leap of imagination to see why so many people take this casual vanity one step further.

Britons are expected to spend an astonishing £659million next year on cosmetic surgery.

Procedures on the face and neck are the most popular choices. Breast enlargements are up 150% compared to 2003, with around 26,000 operations carried out last year.

After one last check in the mirror, we asked people on the streets: which sex is the more vain?
