Student Cheating Rampant in Canada

A new study has found a high level of cheating among Canadian high school and college students.

The report to be published in the Canadian Journal for Higher Education shows 18 percent of university students polled admitted to cheating on a test, and that 58 percent said they did so in high school.

When it comes to written assignments, 53 percent of university students conceded they had lifted parts, or all, of their papers from the Internet, or in some cases had turned in someone else’s work.

At the same time, a large number of instructors ignore suspected cheating on the assumption it would be too difficult to prove, the study said.

Experts told the Canwest news service that cheating was a byproduct of increasing academic pressures and a lack of clarity about using material from the Internet.
