New Jersey to Test New Anti-Icing Road Technology

New Jersey Department of Transportation officials are eagerly awaiting the first frozen precipitation of the winter season – to test out a new technology that’s supposed to completely eliminate traffic accidents due to icy conditions.

D-O-T Commissioner Kris Kolluri says the substance – called Safelane – has already been embedded into the surface of the road on a ramp connecting Routes 19 and 80 in Passaic County, and right before any frozen precipitation or snow starts falling "the epoxy material will release itself- preventing icing of the roadway- and will also help cars to not skid on the road surface."

He says "the technology that’s embedded (in the road) will last a good 15 years, and it’s been tested in other parts of the country with remarkable success."

Kolluri adds "if we can reduce the number of accidents on this section of the roadway, it certainly is a technology we should try elsewhere."

The Safelane pilot program is costing the D-O-T about 94 thousand dollars.
