Regardless if you are the religious type, one religion we can all find solace in is the cult of architecture, and we’ve found plenty to "believe in" at the recently unveiled — as part of November’s Tokyo Design Week — Harajuku Protestant Church (2-11-13 Kita-Aoyama).
The project, by architecture duo Ciel Rouge Creation (Henri Gueydan and Fumiko Kaneko), was named "Clart ," and it’s no wonder why: a wavy array of arches in an all-white interior, accentuated by the odd colored chairs. Beautiful. The ceiling is specially made to reverberate natural sound for 2 seconds to provide a unique listening experience for worshipers and tourists.
The closest station is Gaienmae on the Ginza subway line. Take the exit that brings you near the Bell Commons building (and while there, we suggest you take in the interior paradise that is the Cibone select shop), take a right, and then the next right after that. You’ll find the church on the left-hand side of the road, not far from the Brazilian embassy.
