Teens 17 and older are more than twice as likely to adopt new technologies as younger teens, according to JupiterResearch’s "Teens and New Technology: Understanding the Adoption Cycle" report.
Zia Daniell Wigder of JupiterResearch said that the gap closes quickly with time.
"In 2004, 8% of older teens embraced the iPod as compared to 2% of the younger teen population," Ms. Wigder said. "Within two years, use by both 13- and 17-year-olds had increased to almost 30%."
Ms. Wigder said the same adoption pattern held true for mobile phones and other technologies, indicating that results were not just a product of the iPod’s popularity.
The exception to this adoption pattern was in Internet usage. The increase in time spent online was even for all teens from 2002–2006. Older teens logged the most hours-per-week online, but usage by most teen groups increased by about 20% regardless of age.
