Engineers at Edinburgh University have made a breakthrough on creating supercomputers small enough to fit in a mobile phone.
Researchers from the school of engineering and electronics are examining how tiny wires – 1000 times thinner than a human hair – behave when manipulated.
It is hoped such studies could lead to handheld super computers. Working with the University of Rome and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the scientists found that, below a certain width, wires react differently.
Michael Zaiser, of Edinburgh University’s research team, said: "Holding a supercomputer in the palm of your hand will one day be possible – and we are going to make sure all the wires are in the right place."
