Slick Design To Heating

radratiators.JPG

Its a functional work of art..yeah really it is!

Totally Rad: Karim Rashid Does Radiators, an exhibit that opened this week in New York City, features radiators that you’d be forgiven for mistaking for contemporary sculpture. It’s curated by Karim Rashid, the mad designer behind this Kone vacuum and these modern kitchen tools.

These heaters aren’t just artsy concepts. They’re all real steam-heat radiators in production today (mostly in Europe).

It’s quite a collection. From Gruppo Ragaini comes a radiator that holds and warms pillows. Once they’re toasty, just take them out and add them to the couch. While some of the radiators can hold towels in the bathroom, one of our favorites in the exhibit is shaped like a shower curtain. Others, like the one made from green squares, are like tiles – fill a wall with as many as you’d like and use them in creative patterns. The one that’s made to resemble bamboo (above) is great, but the most creative of the bunch is the flexible radiator that looks like an oversize garden hose. It comes in different lengths, and although it’s coiled around a hook in the exhibit, it doesn’t have to fit on the wall quite so neatly.

Check out some of the radiators below. The exhibit runs through May 17 at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
