Colorado Inventor Showcase 2009
Inventing the Economic Engines to Create a Better Tomorrow
This year’s Colorado Inventor Showcase on Nov 3rd is quickly becoming a “can’t miss event.” The Colorado Inventor Showcase will mark it’s 5th annual event this year. Each year the Showcase attracts some of the nation’s finest inventors and their incredibly clever inventions. Inventions are judged by a cast of 72 celebrity judges, and will be on display throughout the afternoon and evening for all attendees.
As executive director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, a non-profit organization within MIT’s School of Engineering, Joshua Schuler focuses on advancing strategic goals that support the program’s mission to recognize outstanding inventors, encourage sustainable new solutions to real-world problems, and enable and inspire young people to pursue creative lives and careers through invention. He has been responsible for managing the daily operations of this educational initiative and leading a staff of six, since he began this position in July 2007.
From August 2003 to July 2007, Schuler held the post of InvenTeams grants officer, a supervisory position for the Lemelson-MIT Program’s national initiative to inspire a new generation of inventors by awarding high school teams grants of up to $10,000 each to develop an invention that solves a problem they have identified. Through Schuler’s vision, leadership and entrepreneurial spirit, InvenTeams evolved from a pilot that served three New England teams to a pedagogical prototype for hands-on problem solving that funded grants for as many as 20 schools from Alaska to New Mexico to Florida. Schuler also established continuation grants as a means for former grantees to sustain inventive communities through the experiential learning of InvenTeams.
Prior to joining the Lemelson-MIT Program, Schuler was a consultant for Axxon Biopharm, Inc. from 2001 to 2003. He also served as a consultant on the Renault-Nissan Alliance for Renault from 2000 to 2001, at which time he also earned his MBA from the Collège des Ingénieurs in Paris, France.
Schuler received his S.M. in technology and policy at MIT in 2000, where he was involved in several positions as a teaching and research assistant, and completed a rotation with The Far East Organization, an international real-estate developer, in Singapore.
A native of Ithaca, N.Y., Schuler also served as chief aide to the Mayor of Ithaca and concurrently as a volunteer firefighter through AmeriCorps from 1996 to 1997. He received his B.A. in political science and B.S. in environmental science from Tufts University in 1995. Schuler is an avid rower who has also enjoyed coaching and teaching the sport.
