Taking a high-tech approach to fighting crime, London’s borough of Newham unleashed the power of 206 surveillance cameras bolstered by FaceIt® Surveillance–the face recognition technology developed by Visionics Corporation of Jersey City, NJ. The closed circuit television cameras monitor strategic locations throughout the borough, constantly feeding video images to FaceIt®. Images are instantly processed, matching faces against a computer database of suspects and known criminals. Police automatically are alerted when a match is made.

“It can detect faces in motion, faces at a distance and faces among other faces,” Visionics’ Frances Zelazny told BBC News Online.
