Medtronic Inc. is widening distribution of a system that enables physicians to check patients’ implanted cardiac devices via the Internet in what the company calls “virtual office visits.”

With the simple stroke of an antenna-like tool, a patient can send data to doctors just about anywhere in the world via the Medtronic CareLink Network. The network has already been used on 59 patients in 10 U.S. clinics and will be rolled out to other facilities in the coming weeks, Medtronic said in a news release.
