Advanced Cell Technology has already been slapped on the hand by President Bush after claiming to have cloned the first human embryo. Now it has annoyed legislators once again by building kidney and heart cells using stem cells taken from cloned bovine fetuses.

This research is the first proof that so-called therapeutic cloning — which scientists hope could help treat various diseases — might actually work. But critics say their technique is a slippery slope toward “fetus farming,” because the bovine fetuses were grown inside a cow’s womb for six weeks before they were aborted for use of their stem cells.
