A martial arts-performing robot is the latest product of China’s high technology push.

Named BHR-1, the robot stands 1.58-metres tall (about five feet), weighs 76 kilograms (about 170 pounds) and has 32 joints from head to foot.

The joints allow it to move properly, says the chief scientist on the project, Li Kejie from the Beijing University of Science and Engineering.

BHR-1 can walk at a speed of one kilometre per hour (about half a mile per hour), sense changing ground levels and balance itself. It can also perform Tai Chi.
