A hacker stole credit card details and other data from eBay customers by sending eBay-branded e-mails, to request that the customers visit a website to ‘verify’ their personal details and mothers’ maiden names. The link in the e-mails led users to a web page that seemed to belong to the University of North Carolina, although it has been confirmed that the hacker is not a UNCC student or employee. Recipients believing their eBay accounts would be suspended if the requested details, including Social Security numbers, were not provided, in fact sent their data to a hacker that used a university server to post the web page.
