A cellular receptor that balances the accumulation of fat and fat burning may be a new target for anti-obesity and cholesterol-fighting drugs.



About 65% of Americans are considered overweight, and some states report an obesity rate of over 20%.



Obesity is strongly linked to some of the leading causes of death, including high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.



Researchers from the Salk Institute in California report in the journal Cell that a cell receptor called peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor regulates how fat is used.
