Dan Burnett was in medical school at Duke University when he was alarmed by the number of morbidly obese patients coming through the clinic. He also was disturbed to discover that an increasingly popular option for them is a procedure called gastric bypass surgery, also called bariatric surgery, which causes dramatic weight loss but can have unpleasant side effects.

As a noninvasive alternative, Burnett came up with a capsule made of a patent-pending polymer that expands in the stomach, causing patients to feel full sooner.
