Thousands of Victorian cows are wearing Radio Frequency Identification tags as part of a pilot program to streamline collection and testing of milk samples.

The tags are being used in conjunction with handheld scanners and a sorting robot at the Northern Herd Development Co-operative laboratory in the state’s north-west.

The NHD provides dairy herd improvement services such as milk testing and artificial insemination, and the project aims to simplify milk sample testing and to encourage more dairies to have milk tested.
