The key to a long and successful marriage is to have lower expectations of the relationship from the start, according to a new study.

With marriage on the decline, and nearly half of men and women regarding monogamy as unnatural, research says couples are less likely to experience steep declines in marital satisfaction if they do not expect such a rosy future.

The situation with many married couples is comparable with that of overly ambitious students.

“A student who expects to get ‘A’ grades in all of his classes may be setting himself up for disappointment.

“Couples who don’t have good relationship skills have to be realistic about their marriage. That does not mean they give up. They need to try harder to improve their relationship skills and to expect some bumps in the road.”
