Epileptic mice have been treated by shutting off genes involved in the condition, a step towards treatments aimed at preventing the development of epilepsy in humans.
Researcher James McNamara and colleagues at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina say their research offers the hope of drugs that could prevent alterations that cause the normal brain to become epileptic.
Current antiseizure drugs inhibit seizures in people with epilepsy, but they don’t prevent the disease from developing.
