Millions of divorce proceedings are expected to be launched in Chile after the country finally made it legal.

Experts fear the country’s legal system could collapse due to the huge demand, reports Estado de Sao Paulo.

Thousands of demands for divorce were issued within the first few hours of the new law being introduced.

Former justice minister Jose Antonio Gomez said: “The courts in the country are not prepared to cope with the demand that we expect.”

It took 10 years for the new law to be passed by Chile’s parliament. Malta and the Philippines are now the only two countries where divorce is still illegal.
