My one worry in this arena is patents. The U.S. Patent & Trademark office is notorious for issuing overly broad patents, and too frequently ones that cover things that aren’t real inventions.

For several years now, the smarter folks on Sand Hill Road, America’s venture-capital capital, have been investing in companies that promise to do something about our reckless reliance on foreign oil.

Let’s hope the PTO is more careful when it comes to renewable energy, or we could be over a different kind of barrel down the road.
