Aerogel is an ultralight material composed of 99.8% air, yet it’s 1000 times less dense than glass and makes for an amazingly effective insulator.

With NASA’s success in using aerogel in its Mars Pathfinder missions, the future of the lightweight material is looking pretty promising. And now a private company called Aerogel Composite has begun developing new applications for the substance, including use as an electrocatalyst for fuel cells and as a chemical sensor.
