Scotland’s Tayside Police Department is the first in Scotland to try a new digital Close Circuit TV system for bicycle patrol officers, enabling them to record crimes in areas that cannot be covered by cameras fitted to patrol cars or conventional CCTV.

The system, which is being tested by a cycle patrol officer in Perth, has been developed and supplied free by Scottish Communications Security Technology, a Perth-based firm specialising in CCTV technologies.

The force is already considering rolling the system out to all 19 cycle patrol officers in the Perth division.

Other Scottish police forces are also taking an interest in the initiative.

The light and compact kit involves a miniature camera fitted to the handlebars and linked to a monitor and hard drive in the pannier of the bike on which images can be stored and downloaded to a computer.
