Old and busted: edible underwear. New hotness: the entire outfit is edible (w/pic).
Saskia van Rijk struts her stuff in the hardcore licorice outfit that licked the competition in the annual Edible Fashion Awards in Hastings.
Hastings’ annual Edible Fashion Awards were held over the weekend, with keen foodies and fashion-lovers from all over Hawke’s Bay enjoying the treats.
The only proviso for entrants was that their outfits be edible or recyclable.
About 50 groups took up the challenge, strutting their creations down the stage on Saturday morning.
One group – the ultimate winner – was made up of three year 11 pupils from Karamu High School in Hastings. Jess Phillips and Sam Marks designed the outfit "Sweet Rock", and Saskia van Rijk, 15, got on stage to model it.
"I had Chucks (shoes) covered in licorice straps, a skirt made of ties covered in black licorice, and my top was licorice allsorts on top of more licorice straps," Saskia said.
The costume included licorice bracelets, licorice earrings, a fake tongue bought from a joke store and the piece de resistance, a toffee guitar. "They said if we won, I had to break the guitar on the stage, so that’s what I did," Saskia said. "It smashed really well. "
The team won its age category as well as the general Hastings Pak ‘N Save Edible Designer of the Year award.
But as for eating the masterpiece?
"There’s no way I would eat that after so many hands were all over it", Saskia said.
