Men in Indonesia climb greased poles to retrieve prizes such as bicycles and rice cookers, as part of Friday’s Independence Day celebrations.

Indonesia is celebrating the 62nd anniversary of its breakaway from Dutch colonial rule. We’re guessing that the ‘climbing a greasy pole to get a prize’ thing is a metaphor for the struggles of the Indonesian people to gain self-determination. Or possibly, that they just thought it would look funny.
