A Robot Run by Flies

This strange looking contraption is a battery powered vehicle. It putters around a New York art gallery looking like…art. What’s interesting about it is the driver or drivers. It’s course is directed and steered entirely by flies. The plastic bubble is filled with large houseflies, and the food and water that nourishes them. That’s right, the enslavement of flies has begun.

A Robot Run by Flies

Swarm, by David Bowen, is an autonomous robotic roaming device whose movements are determined by houseflies housed inside the device itself.

The chamber where they live contains food, water and light to keep them warm but also sensors that detect the changing light patterns produced by their movements. The sensors send the light data to an on-board microcontroller, which in turn activate the motors moving the device in relation to the movements of the flies.
