Invent-a-Game: Kids Design Online Game For Cash Prize

Kids ages 5 to 19 can stop playing Elf Bowling and start working on their own online game. A new contest gives kids the chance to submit their idea for the online game of the century to a major game developer-and possibly earn huge cash.

Best Buy and EA Games have teamed with the United Inventors Association and By Kids for Kids to sponsor the first ever Invent-a-Game Challenge. American kids between the ages of 5 and 19 can log onto the By Kids for Kids website and submit their idea.

The winner earns a $10,000 savings bond, a $100 Best Buy gift card, a trip to Best Buy and EA headquarters and the opportunity to see his idea made into a free online game. Children in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania get another chance to win in their state contest. The winner of each state contest gets a $1,000 savings bond and a $100 Best Buy gift card.

Each entry has the choice to include an attachment-anything from a picture file to a sound clip to a short video. Judges say that an attachment will not improve an entrant’s chances of winning; it will just help clarify the idea.

Aspiring game designers have until March 31, 2009 to submit their idea. So, kids, lay off those elves, and get to work on your own great game!
