Get the moola you deserve from your gift cards!
Step one is easy. Take all your gift cards out of your wallet, and make it your mission to find the remaining balances on each card. You can normally do this by either checking online, or by calling a toll-free number located on the back. By noting the amount left on the card, you’re already aware of what you can and can’t use it with.
Some stores let you use multiple methods of payment, meaning that if it’s a place you regularly shop at, you can use the gift card to simply subsidize your normal purchase. Think of it as a glorified coupon…
Depending on the gift card, you can use it to buy another gift card that has more applicable, broader uses. Amazon lets you buy in any amount, with a minimum of $5. But if you just know you’re not going to use the gift card, you can always try selling it. Web sites like Gift Cards Again and Giftah traffic specifically in buying, selling, and trading unwanted gift cards. Easier yet, whenever I’m in this situation, I will sometimes look for someone (nice enough) who will actually use the gift card to exchange me cash for it. If all else fails, you could give the gift card away; no one’s going to argue with what is essentially free money.
