You know you have a problem when you have to start selling off your nuclear assets to pay the cleanup costs for your nuclear assets, all while acquiring new nuclear assets.

It may seem odd, but that’s just what the British government is doing. Thursday night, assets from Britain’s nuclear power stations were made available to the private sector in an effort to raise £72 billion ($144 billion) for nuclear waste cleanup costs.

 China’s Economy Grows By 65.5% in Past Five Years

China’s economy grew by 65.5 percent over the past five years, or an average annual increase of 10.6 percent, to become the world’s fourth largest economy, Premier Wen Jiabao said at the annual parliament session on Wednesday.

He said the country’s gross domestic product reached 24.66 trillion yuan (US$3.425 trillion) last year, while total government revenue reached 5.13 trillion yuan (US$712 billion), a 171 percent rise in five years.

Crime Rate in Oslo is Four Times that of NYC

The crime rate in Oslo has been growing at an alarming rate and recent statistics show the Norwegian capital had 20 percent more robberies last year than in 2006.

While crime in the rest of Norway has been going down, it has been quite another situation in Oslo, where personal and automobile thefts increased markedly last year.

There were 10,600 crimes reported in public places in 2007, up from 8,000 a year earlier, writes Norwegian daily newspaper Dagbladet.

China’s New Eco-City: Dongtan

China’s New Eco-City: Dongtan

Peter Head of the British design firm Arup. Head leads the 100-person team
behind the green city of Dongtan, set to be completed by 2050.

Dongtan is a new city planned for the island of Chongming, near Shanghai. The city should be open, with accommodation for 50,000, by the time the Expo 2010 opens in Shanghai. By 2040, the city is slated to be one-third the size of Manhattan. Dongtan is the first of up to four slated “eco-cities” to be designed and built in China by Arup, a British company.
