Ecovative Design’s Greensulate Revolutionizes Insulation

Ecovative Design’s Greensulate Revolutionizes Insulation

Ecovative Design’s Greensulate (building insulation) and Negative Volume (packaging) are manufactured -or rather, grown-from agricultural waste products like rice hulls, which are combined with water, recycled paper and living mushroom cells to create panels that can be used to insulate buildings or protect packages during shipment.

Soybeans And Coconuts To Power Jets

Who Says Only McDonald’s Can Use Soybeans for Gas

Scientists in the US have turned oil from plants like soybeans and coconuts into jet fuel that is equivalent to kerosene derived from oil.

According to a report in the Scientific American, working with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), scientists at the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) at the University of North Dakota turned these plant oils into fuel that had a similar density, energy content and even freezing point.

Energy Seed Concept Uses Spent Batteries

Energy Seed Concept Uses Spent Batteries

 Energy Seed Lamp

I threw away two batteries yesterday. I know, I know-it’s almost the same as chopping down like five old-growth oak trees or something, but it was just so damn easy. And what else are you gonna do with dead batteries? That’s exactly why I am jazzed about this Energy Seed concept by Sungwoo Park. You collect all the batteries that no longer power your digital cameras, baby toys and TV remotes, and you deposit them in the base of this lamp. The lamp then glows, because even a mostly spent battery will be able to power an ultra-efficient light source.

Smencils – Gourmet Scented Pencils Made With Rolled Newspaper

smencils-1234.jpg

Smell and Draw

On one hand, I really like that these Smencils are made from sheets of recycled newspaper tightly rolled around a #2 graphite core. Not only do they sharpen like a regular pencil, but you also get to see the different layers of newsprint as you grind them down, kind of like the rings on a tree. However, why they felt the need to then soak the pencils in gourmet liquid scents is beyond me. (Supposedly made by an award winning fragrance company.) The Smencils are available in packs of 10 (packaged in separate freshness tubes) and each one has a different scent including bubble gum, cinnamon, popcorn, grape, cotton candy, very berry, chocolate, orange, watermelon and rootbeer.

Lawnmower Turns Waste Grass Into Toys

Lawnmower Turns Waste Grass Into Toys

 Muwi Concept Mower

The electric-sheep lawnmower may have tickled your fancy, but this Muwi concept mower from designer Yuli Sung will have you scratching your head. The concept’s roughly the same as the sheep: It automatically assesses the grassy areas, and then cuts the lawn without supervision required. Cunningly, it grabs the grass cuttings inside where they won’t lie around setting off people’s hay fever. But then it does something strange… it compacts the cuttings into toys. Scratching yet?

Paper House Still Standing After 80 Years

Paper House Still Standing After 80 Years

Back in 1922, a mechanical engineer began building his summer home in Rockport, Massachusetts out of paper. Originally used just as insulation, Elis Stenman soon began to make furniture and decorations out of paper as well. What resulted was Rockport’s Paper House, which is remarkably still standing after 80 years. Stenman’s grandniece is now in charge of the house, which was turned into a museum in the 1930s.
