New Kind of Solar Dish to Energize Power Production

New Kind of Solar Dish to Energize Power Production

Team leader Spencer Ahrens fastens mirrors in place using wire and plastic washers

Researchers say that a new type of solar energy collector, which concentrates the sun into a beam that could melt steel, could revolutionize global energy production. The prototype is a 12-foot-wide mirrored dish was made from a lightweight frame of thin, inexpensive aluminum tubing and strips of mirror. It concentrates sunlight by a factor of 1,000 to produce steam

NASA Plans to Send Probe to the Sun

NASA Plans to Send Probe to the Sun
Getting bored with looking at other planets, NASA now plans to probe the sun

For more than 400 years, astronomers have studied the sun from afar. Now NASA has decided to go there. ‘We are going to visit a living, breathing star for the first time,’ says program scientist Lika Guhathakurta of NASA Headquarters. “This is an unexplored region of the solar system and the possibilities for discovery are off the charts.”

Solar Powered Greenery Will Be A Huge Hit!

What do you do when your species unsettles the balance of nature? Create artificial nature to make up the difference, of course. Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Mitsubishi Corp. and Tokki Corp. have developed a prototype solar cell module that realistically takes on the look of a common houseplant.

The falx hybrid-electric tilt-rotor concept in police trim.

Tilt-rotor aircraft have been around since the 1950s, offering the vertical take-off, hovering and landing abilities of a helicopter with the range, high flight ceiling, speed and fuel economy of a turboprop aeroplane. Falx Air Vehicles are planning to push the fuel economy angle even further by using a hybrid-electric motor and inbuilt solar arrays.

eSolar Announces Funding Boost For Scaleable, Pre-Fabricated Solar Plants

esolar.jpg

eSolar has raised $130 million in funding for the deployment of its solar thermal power plants. The scaleable, pre-fabricated power plants are designed to cut construction costs and deliver renewable energy solutions tailored to the needs of particular communities.

Large scale solar utility projects can face significant construction costs in addition to requiring large parcels of land and expensive transmission line improvements to bring the power out of the deserts and into the cities. The modular nature of eSolar is designed to minimize costly civil construction and the use of heavy equipment, reducing project cost and deployment time.
