EPA Declares Greenhouse Emissions Endanger Human Health

EPA Declares Greenhouse Emissions Endanger Human Health

Total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions were 7,282 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent in 2007, an increase of 1.4 percent from the 2006 level. The U.S.

Environmental Protection Agency on Friday declared that greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide endanger human health and welfare, clearing the way for possible U.S. regulation.

How Microbes Can Fuel America In The Future

How Microbes Can Fuel America In The Future

Scientists Use Tiny Organisms to Create Fuel, Viruses to Make Batteries

For millenniums, microbes have been a staunch technological ally. They have leavened our bread and cured our cheeses. Now, engineers are asking them to convert carbon dioxide into fuel and to build a new generation of batteries. Some of the smallest life forms with which we share the planet are helping us cope with the energy challenges of the 21st century.

‘Ice That Burns’ May Provide Clean, Sustainable Fuel For The Future

‘Ice That Burns’ May Provide Clean, Sustainable Fuel For The Future

‘Ice that burns’ – gas hydrates

In the future, natural gas derived from chunks of ice that workers collect from beneath the ocean floor and beneath the arctic permafrost may fuel cars, heat homes, and power factories. Government researchers are reporting that these so-called “gas hydrates,” a frozen form of natural gas that bursts into flames at the touch of a match, show increasing promise as an abundant, untapped source of clean, sustainable energy. The icy chunks could supplement traditional energy sources that are in short supply and which produce large amounts of carbon dioxide linked to global warming, the scientists say.

New Study: Warming In Antarctica Now Looks Certain

New Study: Warming In Antartica Now Looks Certain

Warming that scientists have determined has occurred in West Antarctica during the last 50 years.

Antarctica is warming.  That is the conclusion of scientists analyzing half a century of temperatures on the continent, and the findings may help resolve a climate enigma at the bottom of the planet.

Passenger Jet Powered By Jet Fuel Made From A Weed

Passenger Jet Powered By Jet Fuel Made From A Weed

Technicians at UOP examine equipment used to convert jatropha oil into jet fuel.

On December 3, a Boeing 747 belonging to Air New Zealand is scheduled to take off from Auckland, New Zealand, powered in part by a new type of jet fuel made from a weed. A mixture of equal parts biofuel and conventional fuel will run one of the plane’s engines. The biofuel, which could help reduce carbon-dioxide emissions, was developed by UOP, a major supplier of technology for petroleum refining.

Study Implicates Climate As A Major Driver Of Wildfires

Study Implicates Climate As A Major Driver Of Wildfires

Climate has been implicated by a new study as a major driver of wildfires in the last 2,000 years. But human activities, such as land clearance and fire suppression during the industrial era (since 1750) have created large swings in burning, first increasing fires until the late 1800s, and then dramatically reducing burning in the 20th century.

‘Tired Blood’ Warning: Ignore It at Your Own Risk

‘Tired Blood’ Warning: Ignore It at Your Own Risk

Thanks to advertisements for the once-popular tonic Geritol, most people of a certain age know about “tired blood,” a disorder more accurately called anemia, involving a shortage of healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to body tissues and cleanse them of carbon dioxide.
