The design blog Dornob has a post describing flooring made from recycled leather belts, including rugs and floor tiles. They’re pricey, at about $70 per square foot. So Dornob suggests that you could make your own:

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative approach, however, local vintage clothing stores may sell a belt for a few dollars. After finding a few choice samples, it is just a matter of figuring out the best way to put them together…

Winners of DawnTown Announced – Miami’s Design Competition For The Metromover

With this year’s Art Basel/Design Miami in the can, you’d think Miami would quietly sink into the shadows, away from the international design spotlight. Not so fast. A new architecture competition recently announced its winners, bringing global attention to the city’s built environment for the third year. The annual contest, named DawnTown focused this year on a new downtown station design for Metromover, Miami’s elevated transit system.

The Countdown Traffic Light


Just one look at this countdown traffic light and you know it’s a great idea. A progress bar on a stop light? We’re on board with that. Besides alleviating frustration, designer Damjan Stanković sees his idea saving energy — when motorists know there’s plenty of time until the light turns green, they’ll shut their engines off to conserve fuel. Sleep Box – Let’s You Catch Up On Sleep While Traveling

Russian architects Arch Group have designed a booth for taking a quick nap in busy urban environments.  Called Sleepbox, the units could be rented for between fifteen minutes and several hours.  The architects envisage them installed at train stations, airports and shopping centres.  (Pics)

Rotterdam’s Parks Will Recycle Rainwater While Serving As Urban Playgrounds



To launch its 14th anthology, Water, Alphabet City has organized a series of events this week in Toronto, two of which are the HYDROCity symposium and its accompanying exhibition at the University of Toronto. Another event is a lunchtime talk in which Jeroen Bodewits will discuss Waterpleinen, a project designed by Florian Boer and Marco Vermeulen to reconfigure the stormwater infrastructure of Rotterdam.
