E-waste might be one of the biggest misnomers in the history of nomery — the image it creates in the mind is of a bunch of email and document files clogging up your local internet pipes. The reality of it is that electronic waste is rapidly populating ever-growing landfill areas in so-called developing countries (they’re poor, just call a spade a spade) and the issue has now garnered the attention of the United Nations…

Does A Twin Earth Exist?

Does A Twin Earth Exist?

Artist’s conception shows a hypothetical twin Earth orbiting a Sun-like star.

Does a twin Earth exist somewhere in our galaxy? Astronomers are getting closer and closer to finding an Earth-sized planet in an Earth-like orbit. NASA’s Kepler spacecraft just launched to find such worlds. Once the search succeeds, the next questions driving research will be: Is that planet habitable? Does it have an Earth-like atmosphere? Answering those questions will not be easy.

Need Another Reason To Quit Smoking – Third Hand Smoke

Need Another Reason To Quit Smoking - Third Hand Smoke

Need another reason to add “Quit Smoking” to your New Year’s resolutions list? How about the fact that even if you choose to smoke outside of your home or only smoke in your home when your children are not there – thinking that you’re keeping them away from second-hand smoke – you’re still exposing them to toxins? In the January issue of Pediatrics, researchers at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) and colleagues across the country describe how tobacco smoke contamination lingers even after a cigarette is extinguished – a phenomenon they define as “third-hand” smoke. Their study is the first to examine adult attitudes about the health risks to children of third-hand smoke and how those beliefs may relate to rules about smoking in their homes.

Virgin Galactic Will Fly You To Space And Monitor The Climate

Virgin Galactic Will Fly You To Space And Monitor The Climate

 Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnight

Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo aircraft will be doing the world a favor when they start flying paying passengers into space: they’ll be carrying sensors aboard to monitor greenhouse gases at a little-monitored altitude. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has just signed a deal with Virgin to let it install sensors on the two vehicles, since it turns out that they will be one of the few aircraft that fly at around 50,000 feet. Most aircraft, with the exception of the sadly gone Concorde, fly below this altitude, and scientists would like to get their hands on air data from this height to help with environmental monitoring.

Introducing the Bad Breath Detector

Introducing the Bad Breath Detector

It’s a bad breath detector!

If you get lucky at the local club you can quickly check yourself out with the meter and buy one of those peppermint sprays if necessary. Better still, you can hold this gadget in front of your hot date’s mouth and check to see if s/he needs to buy some mints too.

It detects the specific gases from your teeth or stomach, and shows 5 levels of mouth smell in different colors of LED display.

Video after the jump.
