Invisibility Cloaks Could Take the Sting out of Hurricanes

Invisibility Cloaks Could Take the Sting out of Hurricanes

Protection comes in many forms

Invisibility cloaks that are able to steer light around two dimensional objects have become reality in the last few years. But the first real-world application of the theories that made them possible could be in hiding vulnerable coastlines and offshore platforms from destructive hurricanes and tsunamis.

Coolest Satellite to Orbit Earth, Ever

Coolest Satellite to Orbit Earth, Ever

Feature: highly accurate mapping

The European Space Agency is set to launch the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) Star Destroyer satellite on September 10th. This advanced mission will be the most sophisticated piece of kit ever to orbit the Earth, investigating the Earth’s gravitational field. It will perform a highly accurate mapping campaign, producing a high resolution reference shape of the geoid (i.e. the shape of our planet). The mission will be unprecedented, but that’s not the reason why I’m drawing attention to it…

Mars Express To Make Daring Flyby

Mars Express To Make Daring Flyby

The European spacecraft Mars Express is to make a daring flyby of the Martian moon Phobos in the hope of gaining insights into its enigmatic surface, temperature and geological past, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on Wednesday.

On 23 July, the unmanned craft will swoop to within just 97 kilometres of Phobos, using a battery of instruments, including a high-resolution stereo camera, infra-red scanner and atmospheric spectrometer.

Geomagnetism Linked to Suicide

 Geomagnetism Linked to Suicide

Geomagnetism is an influential force on humanity

Scientists believe that earth’s magnetic field may be responsible for suicidal behavior among people.

Oleg Shumilov of the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems in Russia studied earth’s geomagnetic field from 1948 to 1997 and found three seasonal peaks, from March to May, July and October.

Japanese Astronaut Finds Boomerangs Come Back In Space

boomerangbz6.jpg

Japanese astronaut Takao Doi has thrown a boomerang in space and found, to the surprise of many, that it does come back.

The 53-year-old conducted an experiment aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday, Japanese time, to see whether boomerangs fly back in space. Many had predicted that it wouldn’t but Doi confirmed that it did indeed return to him.
