A Japanese food manufacturer called Morinaga produces canned milkshakes that are flavored like pancakes:

Morinaga, on the other hand, simply strives to imitate the taste of breakfast (and a Morinaga Hotcake breakfast at that) without worrying overly much about vitamins and so forth….

It had to happen…A Japanese man infatuated with a character in a computer game has married the object of his desires in a solemn ceremony in Tokyo.

The groom – who calls himself SAL9000 – says he fell in love with Nene Anegasaki from the Nintendo DS game Love Plus after a string of failed romances with girlfriends from other animated games.

The wedding took place at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and was presided over by a priest. The groom, dressed in a white suit and tie, read his vows before Ms Anegasaki flashed hers up on the touch screen of his red Nintendo.

The event was broadcast live on the Nico Nico Douga website, with the groom’s best man giving a speech and Ms Anegasaki’s maid of honour – also imaginary – posting an on-screen message expressing her happiness at the first union of a man and computer character.

Ig Nobel Biology Prize Goes To Panda Poo Power

panda_power

Researchers from Kitasato University in Tokyo have been awarded this year’s Ig Nobel Biology Prize for demonstrating a method to reduce kitchen waste by more than 90% by using bacteria derived from Giant Panda excrement.  Professor Fumiaki Taguchi, who shares the prize with fellow researchers Song Guofu and Zhang Guanglei (both from the Kitasato University Graduate School of Medical Sciences), began the project in 1998 after suspecting panda feces must contain bacteria capable of breaking down even the hardiest of foods because of the bear’s vast consumption of bamboo.

Japan’s New Powdered Beer

Powdered Beer 872

Powdered Beer! What a brilliant idea! Or not!
David Ewalt: A lot of weird and wonderful stuff comes out of Japan. Kaiju. Crazygame shows. The tanuki. They make good beer, too — I’ll put a mass-market lager from Asahi or Kirin up against Budweiser or Miller any day. But I wasn’t quite so impressed when I recently tried a Japanese powdered beer provided by my friend Ryan — sure, it was weird and fun, but as an actual beverage… not so great. (Pics)

Sony’s MotionPortrait Turns Photos Into 3D Animation

MotionPortrait

We don’t pretend to understand the Japanese, we usually just nod graciously and smile when they dazzle us with their consumer electronics and robots. Amazing Lego Space Shuttle

Amazing Lego Space Shuttle

Lego Space Shuttle

I’m almost a little embarrassed to admit that I first thought this was a photo of a real space shuttle. Two Japanese LEGOsmiths used a whopping 65,000 bricks and 1,590 man hours to complete the stunning diorama, which even simulates a launch with flashing lights under the boosters and a vocal countdown. The only thing it doesn’t do is lift off. (Pics)

Off-Kilter Japanese Cult TV show “Oh! Mikey”

Once a part of the wonderfully named “Vermilion Pleasure Night,” a sort of Japanese version of “Adult Swim,” “Oh! Mikey” is a bizarre comedy show cast entirely with widely grinning, frozen-faced mannequins. Each approximately two-minute episode of “Oh! Mikey” is about an American family living in Japan…
