Passenger Jet Powered By Jet Fuel Made From A Weed

Passenger Jet Powered By Jet Fuel Made From A Weed

Technicians at UOP examine equipment used to convert jatropha oil into jet fuel.

On December 3, a Boeing 747 belonging to Air New Zealand is scheduled to take off from Auckland, New Zealand, powered in part by a new type of jet fuel made from a weed. A mixture of equal parts biofuel and conventional fuel will run one of the plane’s engines. The biofuel, which could help reduce carbon-dioxide emissions, was developed by UOP, a major supplier of technology for petroleum refining.

Noise Suppressor For Jet Engines In the Works

Noise Suppressor For Jet Engines In the Works

Good news for anyone living near an airport: someone’s just thought of a way to quiet down those noisy jet planes. Dimitri Papamoschou at the University of California filed a patent earlier this year for a jet-engine silencer. Recognizing that a great deal of the noise jets create is due to turbulence in fast-flowing air from the engine, he clever devised a way to separate the expunged air into two channels of high and low speeds, putting the fast stuff up top so the noise is directed upwards. If it works noise on the ground could be reduced by more than half (about 6 dB).

John Travolta’s Back Yard

John Travolta’s Back Yard

Travolta’s Florida mansion looks more like an airport

John Travolta is an interesting paradox. Yes, every last blade of grass is online, but it’s all the stuff on it that causes the commotion. The man is telling people to conserve resources (he encourages his fans to “do their bit to tackle global warming”). but there it is– his Florida estate filled with custom jet aircraft–a 707, two or three Gulfstreams, a Lear jet–all parked along the neat golf course-like landscaping, somewhere near the huge swimming pool (though at first you might mistake it for Lake Okeechobee), not too far from the SUV fleet which is sort of intermingled with the Yankee Stadium class array of lighting equipment. Yes, I’ll admit, I’m jealous. (Pics)

Redefining the flying car

What exactly is a flying car?

My life is a bit unusual in that I often have conversations with people about the topic of flying cars. Since I was a child I dreamed about the day that we would have flying cars. But, other than the vague notion of the flying car that George Jetson drove each day to Spacely Sprockets, we have no real definition of the flying car, until now.
