Deafness can lead to heated arguments between couples and even marital breakdown, according to a survey about the social consequences of hearing loss published today.  The hard-of-hearing partner often feels upset that their spouse does not understand what it is like to suffer from the condition, the poll found.

According to an eight-year study of 218 couples, ninety percent of the couples experienced a decrease in marital satisfaction once the first child was born.

A team of researchers at the Princeton University has found that beyond a period of four years, the benefits of marriage are often outweighed by having less time to see friends and a larger household workload.
