Nokia’s Smart Home Center

Nokia’s Smart Home Center

The cellphone giant Nokia wishes to tinker with your home, letting you control the entire house activities from the leisure of your couch or the bed. Nokia is to develop a new platform to enable users to monitor their electronics and homes energy status locally or remotely, with a mobile device. For developing the platform Nokia has teamed up with RWE, Europe’s largest home energy providers. With the help of the platform users can remain connected to their homes and monitor their homes’ energy consumption, security devices and other like cameras and motion sensors. Apart from the normal home automation features the Smart Home will allow users to turn off appliances that are wasting energy when they are away from home.

Portable, Noninvasive Trauma Monitors

Portable, Noninvasive Trauma Monitors

A portable, noninvasive monitor developed by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Patients with severe injuries or serious infections run the risk of circulatory shock–a life-threatening condition in which the blood can’t supply tissues with enough oxygen and nutrients. If shock is recognized in time, the patient can be resuscitated with oxygen, intravenous fluids, and medications. But catching shock early is no simple matter. A small infrared sensor currently under development at the University of Massachusetts Medical School promises to detect impending shock earlier than any other noninvasive test.

Are Optical Illusions Caused By The Brain Or The Eye?

(Left) Isia Leviant’s Enigma. Most viewers say the purple rings appear to fill with rapid illusory motion. (Right) A simplified version that the researchers used in the study. Most viewers report illusory motion lengthwise along the gray stripe.

When viewing the famous optical illusion painting Enigma by Isia Leviant, many people claim to see motion within the colored circles moving against the black and white striped background. Although this optical illusion has been known for a long time, its physiological origins are still unknown.

Virgin Galactic Will Fly You To Space And Monitor The Climate

Virgin Galactic Will Fly You To Space And Monitor The Climate

 Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnight

Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo aircraft will be doing the world a favor when they start flying paying passengers into space: they’ll be carrying sensors aboard to monitor greenhouse gases at a little-monitored altitude. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has just signed a deal with Virgin to let it install sensors on the two vehicles, since it turns out that they will be one of the few aircraft that fly at around 50,000 feet. Most aircraft, with the exception of the sadly gone Concorde, fly below this altitude, and scientists would like to get their hands on air data from this height to help with environmental monitoring.
