Your Boxspring Could Be Giving You Cancer By Acting As A Giant, Radiation-Emitting Antenna

Breast cancer is more likely to occur on the left side than on the right.

A Swedish study is trying to nail down the reason that cancer is 10% more likely to occur in the left breast over the right, on top of the steadily increasing risk of cancer over last 30 years. One theory? Your box spring could be a giant, radiation-emitting antenna.

ThruVision: Next-Generation Body Scanner is Radiation-Free

ThruVision can see through clothes without radiation.

With full body scanners people have two big concerns: the amount of harmful radiation involved, and if it will reveal the details of one’s body. A company called ThruVision is demoing a next-gen system that’s radiation-free and doesn’t give anything away.

Amazing Video of the Sun Melting Steel

Melting steel in a solar oven.

Melting steel in a solar oven (aka solar concentrator) isn’t new or unique, but it’s always cool to see and a good reminder of just how much energy is hitting the sunny side of the planet at any moment. The video below shows a short exerpt of James May’s “ Big Ideas” series (James is better known for the Top Gear show), and they start by cooking, er, burning a sausage, and then they melt a steel plate. Impressive to see how quickly it turns to a liquid. (video)

First Cell Phone Radiation Law Passed in San Francisco

Retailers must post how much radiation is emitted by the cell phones they sell.

We know what happens when a radioactive spider bites you. You become spiderman. But what happens when you get too much cell phone radiation? Nothing good, that’s for sure. And so the people of San Francisco will soon have a new cellphone radiation law to help.

Are Cell Phones to Blame for the Disappearance of Honey Bees?

honey bee

Researchers claim they have found the cause of the decline in bees which could be the first step in reversing the decline.

The growing use of mobile telephones is behind the disappearance of honey bees and the collapse of their hives, scientists have claimed.  Their disappearance has caused alarm throughout Europe and North America where campaigners have blamed agricultural pesticides, climate change and the advent of genetically modified crops for what is now known as ‘colony collapse disorder.’ Britain has seen a 15 per cent decline in its bee population in the last two years and shrinking numbers has led to a rise in thefts of hives.

11 Cellphones that Emit the Highest Radiation Levels

It is unclear if cellphones cause side effects, but it is clear that they do emit radation.

Do cellphones cause brain cancer, dementia or have other side effects? Though there have been numerous studies on this, the verdict remains unclear. For, some studies reveal long-term side effects of cellphone usage, others term them as mere hype.  (Pics)

Just how many nuclear bombs does the United States of America have? For thirty years, the exact number of bombs the Pentagon stockpiles has been a secret (though people have pretty much guessed correctly).

Now, for the first time ever, that number has been officially released by the Obama administration: it’s 5,113 warheads.

From the Federation of American Scientists..

CAT Scans Put Patients at Greater Risk of Developing Cancer

CT scan

CT or CAT Scan

Having a CT – or CAT – scan puts patients at far greater risk of developing cancer than previously thought, scientists claim.  The radiation generated by the scans – an increasingly popular diagnostic tool – may trigger the disease in as many as one in 80 patients.

Mobile Phone Radiation Found To Stunt Crops In India

Convenience vs Heath
Mobile phones may have become ubiquitous in rural areas of India and popular among farmers. But electromagnetic radiation emanating from them may be stunting the growth of agricultural crops and plants, preliminary research has revealed.

Studies carried out at Panjab University, Chandigarh, suggest that electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from cell phones could choke seeds, affect germination and early growth. This is said to be the first such study on the impact of EMF radiation on seeds.

The researchers germinated moong dal (Phaseolus aureus) seeds in a closed chamber in which two cell phones were kept on talk mode.

Space Colonization Limited By Fermi Paradox

Colonizing Galaxy Limited By Fermi Paradox

Space Colony

For more than 50 years, many have taken the so-called Fermi Paradox to indicate that the existence of intelligent alien civilizations is an impossibility. However, a recent re-examination of the paradox points out that, rather than discounting the spread of an intelligent civilization, the Fermi Paradox merely points out that advanced civilizations with exponential growth are unlikely to exist.
