 Bumper crop of babies last year, even a few cute ones

Data released by the federal government shows a record numbers of infants born in the United States in 2007. The report was released last week by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. It shows 4,315,000 births in 2007, which some demographers say could signal a potential infant “boomlet.”

Home Prices Down a Record 10.7% but Wall Street Yawns

Home prices fell the most on record in January while consumer confidence in the U.S. economy plunged this month, according to separate reports published yesterday.

While the reports reaffirmed pessimistic views that the country has entered a recession or is at least in a severe downturn, Wall Street greeted the news with a collective ho-hum.

Video Game Sales Setting New Records

U.S. video game sales — including hardware and software — jumped 34 percent in February to hit $1.33 billion, even with two top-selling consoles in short supply, according to data from market researcher NPD Group.

Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 have been in such high demand stores are having a hard time keeping them in stock. Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said the company moved up shipments during the holidays and hasn’t been able to catch up since.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a smart video goggle system that records everything the wearer looks at, recognizes and assigns names to objects that appear in the video.

Advanced programs then go back and create an easily searchable database of the recorded footage. Designed to function as a high-tech memory aid, these ‘Cyber Goggles’ promise to make the act of losing your keys a thing of the past, according to head researcher professor Tatsuya Harada.
