Small Search Engines Grab at Google’s Lost Market Shares in China

Sogou accounts for 0.8 percent of China’s online search market in second quarter.

Sohu.com Inc, operator of China’s fourth most-visited Web portal, said on Monday it will link up with Alibaba Group in an effort to grab market share lost by Google Inc.  Sohu said Alibaba Group and Yunfeng Fund, a private fund, would take a 16 percent stake in its search engine subsidiary Sogou.com.

Facebook’s Rapid Ascent Around the World Has Google Worried

A Google founder, Sergey Brin, takes issue with people who say Google has failed to gain a foothold in social networking. Google has had successes, he often says, especially with Orkut, the dominant service in Brazil and India.

Look for images of “Washington” online, and Google’s search engine may turn up a random sea of pictures showing the Washington monument, the White House, George Washington, and actor Denzel Washington. Now Google’s new “Image Swirl” feature could eliminate that hit-or-miss frustration by organizing images in neat, expandable thumbnail stacks for users to explore.

How to do you find the video you want to watch online?

A March 2008 Synovate study sponsored by ClipBlast! found that when it comes to finding online video, search takes a backseat to unaided navigation (also known as discovery) and content recommendations.

When US Internet users were asked how they found video on the Internet, 28% of respondents with a preferred method cited discovery. Recommendations from friends followed closely behind with 27% and search engines were chosen by 22%.
