British Scientists Could Become First To Create Synthetic Human Blood

British Scientists Could Become First To Create Synthetic Human Blood

Scientists want to create blood from embryonic stem cells

British scientists are on course to become the first to create synthetic human blood from embryonic stem cells, it emerged today.

The ground-breaking project could provide an unlimited supply of blood for emergency transfusions free of the risk of infection.

Because stem cells multiply indefinitely, it would be possible to enormous quantities, researchers said..

Transplanted Stem Cells Undo Birth Defects

Transplanted Stem Cells Undo Birth Defects

Neural stem cells, tagged green with a fluorescent dye, have been transplanted among the brain cells (red) of a mouse born with brain damage after its mother was given heroin during pregnancy.

By injecting stem cells directly into the brain, scientists have successfully reversed neural birth defects in mice whose mothers were given heroin during pregnancy. Even though most of the transplanted cells did not survive, they induced the brain’s own cells to carry out extensive repairs.

Doctors Perform Windpipe Transplant With Stem Cells

Doctors Perform Windpipe Transplant With Stem Cells

A patient’s collapsed lung, at right, is seen prior to a windpipe transplant which used tissue grown from the patient’s own stem cells.

Doctors have given a woman a new windpipe with tissue grown from her own stem cells, eliminating the need for anti-rejection drugs. “This technique has great promise,” said Dr. Eric Genden, who did a similar transplant in 2005 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. That operation used both donor and recipient tissue. Only a handful of windpipe, or trachea, transplants have ever been done.

Old Muscle Becomes Young Again

Old Muscle Becomes Young Again

Researchers boost growth of muscle stem cells to stop age-related muscle deterioration.

Manipulating stem cells in old muscle can restore youth to aging tissue, according to research from the University of California, Berkeley. Scientists altered the activity of a molecular pathway to make stem cells in older tissue produce new muscle fibers at levels comparable to young stem cells.

The Military Plans To Regrow Body Parts

The Military Plans To Regrow Body Parts

The US Military believes that humans will someday be able to regrow their limbs much like reptiles

The Department of Defense has announced the creation of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine to ‘harness stem cell research and technology… to reconstruct new skin, muscles and tendons, and even ears, noses and fingers.’ The government is budgeting $250 million in public and private money for the project’s first five years, and the NIH and three universities will be on the team.
