New Design Makes Nuclear Reactors Cheaper and Faster To Build

New Design Makes Nuclear Reactors Cheaper and Faster To Build

A 4.5-meter-wide, 23-meter-long nuclear reactor designed to fit on a railcar for shipping to the site of a power plant.

A new type of nuclear reactor that is designed to be manufactured in a factory rather than built at a power plant could cut construction times for nuclear power plants almost in half and make them cheaper to build. That, in turn, could make it possible for more utilities to build nuclear power plants, especially those in poor countries. The design comes from Babcock and Wilcox, a company based in Lynchburg, VA, that has made nuclear reactors for the United States Navy ships for about 50 years.

Mega yacht “Eclipse”

Roman Abramovich’s most-awaited mega yacht “Eclipse,” touted as the world’s biggest yacht, has finally made a preliminary launch at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany where it was built secretly for more than two years. The 170-meter yacht (557.6 feet) will feature 2 heli-pads, 20 water jets, a pool with large Havana bars surrounding it, a cinema, library, restaurant, private garden, 5,000-square-feet master suite, a private submarine boarding from the bottom of the yacht for a secret escape, and a missile-detection system to deflect pirate attacks safely. The 9-deck megayacht has at least five possible exits, which literally makes it the safest yacht ever built.

Volitan: A Solar/Wind Powered Concept Boat

Might the Volitan presage a new generation of lightweight, fully sustainable boats? It certainly sounds good on paper: the futuristic vessel would use solid sails – equipped with double layer solar cell panels – to harness both wind and solar energy and would have an incredibly light, stiff body structure, courtesy of its carbon fiber and epoxy resin composite-made shell and carbon-foam core lamination. Its body would also have an epoxy primer coat and ultraviolet resistant coating.

The ORCA Man-Overboard Alarm

The ORCA Man-Overboard Alarm

The industrial safety and security experts over at BriarTek Incorporated got the green light (and $19 million) to test a Man Overboard Indicator, or MOBI, on 105 US Navy vessels. The Virginia-based firm’s MOBI, known as the ORCA (for Overboard Recovery Communications Apparatus and not because it’s a killer whale), does more than just alert a ship’s crew of a sailor in the water; it keeps a unique ID for each sailor so rescuers will know who they’re looking for, the downed seaman’s position, and even how many people are in the water in an event where multiple sailors are cast overboard.

As known, oil prices are going up and some companies are finding ways to save on this. The DHS cargo company has come out with the kite-powered cargo ship project (that reminds me something of kite-powered).
