MIT Developing Fabric That Works Like A Camera

New technologies are being continuously developed to keep soldiers safe at the war front. With an imagination to see how best to equip the soldier of tomorrow, MIT researchers have developed light-detecting fibers that can be weaved into a web. Once weaved, these fibers work as a flexible camera. The fabric made from these fibers can be connected to a computer, which will display information on a small screen attached to a visor. Thus, a soldier will get to know of the different movements in his surroundings. While the research team said that such applications are far from real for now, the work to develop fabrics capable of capturing images is in full swing. The new fibers measure less than a millimeter in diameter and are made of layers of light-detecting materials nested.

Qnuru’s Solar Landscape Redefines LEDs

OK, I can admit it – I was one of those people that a few years ago ran out and bought those generic-looking solar garden path lamps and strung them all along the walkways up to my front door. Subsequently I was hugely disappointed that the lamps’ weak pale glow wasn’t enough to keep people from tripping over them and falling into the flower beds. Since then, solar LED lighting, especially for commercial applications, has taken huge leaps in beauty and functionality, and newcomer Qnuru’s designs – by sculptor Tom Joyce – reflect the advances.

 A beam of light from a slit-lamp microscope focused on a cataract.

Cataracts are the single biggest cause of blindness and are responsible for almost half of all cases worldwide. A new laser probe, originally developed for the U.S. space program, has been shown to detect the condition earlier than is otherwise possible. Its developers say that the technique can tell that a cataract is forming even when an eye looks perfectly clear.

But installing a silicon chip into a human eyeball to assist the retinas has some drawbacks, the least of which being that the chip itself can block light from falling on areas of the retina that are healthy and still working properly. The old pet, suffers from entropion – an inward rolling of the eyelids, which causes inflammation and hinders sight.

He has lived at the RSPCA rescue centre in Godshill, Isle of Wight, for 13 years after he was injured in a car accident.
