Average faces of women from around the world

The results of a recent experiment have been published by FaceResearch.org. Experimental psychologists at the University of Glasgow in Scotland have combined the faces of women around the world to approximate the “average face” of each country. Multiple images of faces are aligned and composited together to form the final result using a modern version of the technique that Sir Francis Galton pioneered in the 1800′s.

232 million people live outside their home country

Nearly two-thirds of all international migrants live in Europe and Asia.

New data released by the United Nations shows that 232 million people, or 3.2 percent of the world’s population, live outside of their countries of birth. This global diaspora has big implications as countries try to balance growth with unease over outsiders. So where are all of these people anyway? And are they helping or hurting their new homes?

World’s top 10 fastest supercomputers of 2013 (Infographic)

Titan is a supercomputer built by Cray at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for use in a variety of science projects.

When we buy a new computer we think at some point that it must be a supercomputer, at least when you compare it to the computer you had prior to the new one. it seems our computers are getting slower, but that is not really the case. What happens is that the software we use on it gets more powerful, which makes the computer struggle more. That’s when we all wish we had access to one of the many supercomputers currently being constructed throughout the world.

Chinese shipping firm begins using new arctic shipping route to Europe

The Arctic Ocean shipping route will cut thousands of miles off the journey from China to its key European market. (The Northeast Passage is in blue)

A Chinese merchant ship has made its maiden voyage to Europe through the “Northeast Passage.”  This route will help the world’s biggest exporter speed goods to market and is a symbol of Beijing’s strategic ambitions in the Arctic.

As a group, startups can contribute small incremental changes that together add up to a big difference.

Startups rarely do anything significantly world-changing despite the constant refrain from entrepreneurs that they’re trying to change the world. It’s not their fault.
