In the heat of the moment, it is so easy to tweet, post or Instagram emotionally charged or questionable content.  Those posts or content can come back to bite you. That could be why a new survey finds about one in four young adults fear they’ll get fired or turned down for a job by employers who see their more risqué social-media posts.

Amazon to hire 5,000 for full-time warehouse jobs in the U.S.

An Amazon.com warehouse.

Amazon.com Inc has unveiled a new hiring spree on Monday that will fill more than 5,000 new  full-time jobs at 17 of its fulfillment centers across the United States.   This is ahead of a visit by President Barack Obama to one of the Internet retailer’s giant distribution warehouses this week.

Facebook’s power footprint growing and moving east

A breakdown of power usage at Facebook’s data centers during 2012, from the company’s annual sustainability report.

In 2012, Facebook’s data center energy use grew 33 percent, as the company installed tens of thousands of servers in its new company-built data centers. The growth of the company’s power usage is disclosed in the company’s latest sustainability report, which also documents the company’s move to reduce its computing footprint in Silicon Valley, even as it boosts its reliance on leased space in northern Virginia.

Which industries get the most customer service complaints?

Only 44% of the top 25 online retailers responded to customer service requests from social media within 24 hours.

Social media and the internet have made it much easier for people to vent about bad service to a potentially large audience. If you make a customer unhappy these days you can count on their other 5,000-some friends hearing about it, too.  Twenty-five percent of people who have a negative customer experience share their thoughts on social networks. Community colleges go open source to seek fix for remediation

One of the thorniest problems facing higher education is remedial education.  Some community colleges have found a way to dial-up free online courses to help tackle the problem.  The two-year colleges aren’t offering massive open online courses as substitutes for their offerings, however, or for the instructors who teach them.

Adding more artificial intelligence to online learning could make it faster and more fun

More artificial intelligence will make online learning faster and fun.

Udacity has evolved the MOOC (massive open online courses) concept into one that really helps people throughout the course; to complete the course. The most recent completion rates in pilots we’ve been running have been 85 percent, as opposed to 5 percent or 4 percent, which is common in MOOC-land.

How the Millennial generation shops online

Millennials engage in nearly every online shopping activity.

Millennials have grown up embracing the deep discounts and convenience offered by online shopping. A January 2013 survey from ad agency DDB Worldwide of US web users’ attitudes toward ecommerce found that both males and females ages 18 to 34 were more likely than their 35- to 64-year-old counterparts to engage in nearly every online shopping activity, with 40% of males and 33% of females in the younger age group reporting that ideally they would buy everything online.

70% of developers are dissatisfied with app marketing and advertising

Mobile developers are unhappy with app marketing and advertising.

Over 70 percent of developers are dissatisfied with their current options for app marketing and advertising. That’s the results of a survey by Papaya Mobile, which offers the AppFlood service for promoting mobile games and apps. The survey shows that the majority of developers don’t have a clear idea of the benefits of mobile marketing channels. In particular, they don’t trust ad network providers.
