Two thirds of deaths in the world are caused by cancer, diabetes, heart and lung disease

The rapidly increasing magnitude of noncommunicable diseases is fueled by rising risk factors including tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and lack of physical activity.

Almost two-thirds of deaths in the world are caused by noncommunicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart and lung disease which are rapidly increasing at a cost to the global economy of trillions of dollars, according to U.N. estimates and preliminary results of a new study.

Scientists a step closer to a ‘miracle’ treatment for genetic diseases

genetic breakthrough

Scientists claim they have come up with an entirely new way to rewrite the genetic code – reversing any flaws or faults.

Genetic diseases result from flaws in the body’s DNA that lead to the cells not functioning or developing as they should.  But, the genetic faults that cause diseases such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and some cancers could be repaired in a new technique described as a “miracle of modern medicine.”

Cancer Officially the Number One Cause of Death in China

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in China.

China is starting to see the costs of its rapid march towards industrialization.  Air pollution from heavy industry, coal-fired power plants, and numerous factories have saturated the air and now cancer has officially become the number one cause of death.  Almost 25% of deaths in China are now attributed to cancer. The Earth Policy Institute gleaned as much from China’s own Ministry of Health — and tragically but unsurprisingly, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in China.

Freeway Air Pollution May Cause Brain Damage

Brains are affected by air pollution.

The air pollution that results from the millions of cars and trucks that crowd our highways is ugly stuff — there’s no doubt that the particulate matter it’s laced with causes respiratory illness, heart disease, cancer, and other devastating health effects. As bad as that is, we still might not be properly grasping the extent of the danger air pollution presents — researchers at USC have now linked freeway air pollution to increased brain damage in mice. And they’re concerned humans might suffer similarly.

Absorbing Too Much Chlorinated Water Increases Risk of Cancer

swimming-under-water

People who regularly swim in chlorinated pools or take lots of showers or baths are at an increased risk of cancer.

Swimming too much – or even taking too many baths or showers – could increase the risk of developing bladder cancer, warn environmental health experts.  Carcinogenic chemicals called trihalomethanes (THMs), created as a byproduct of chlorinating water, can be absorbed through the skin, they say.

Scientists Discover How a Rare Cancer Heals Itself

New discovery could lead to new treatments for other types of cancer.

Researchers believe they have found a key gene involved in Ferguson-Smith disease, otherwise known as multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma (MSSE), a skin cancer that grows rapidly but then a few weeks later, inexplicably, heals itself.

A joint team of Indian and Australian scientists claims to have achieved a breakthrough by creating an antibody which could be used for developing a “medical smart bomb” that would help seek out and eradicate the root of cancer — the stem cells.
